A Baritone Option for the Snare Drum.
What is BARITONE?
In the worlds of vocals and instruments such as saxophones, the different registers – soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, each have their own role. While some parts bring color to the music in the higher registers, the baritone supports the center of the ensemble, giving the overall sound greater depth and balance. In the world of drums there is no commonly recognized category called a “baritone snare” but for some time, we have believed that a snare drum can fulfil a similar role.
In modern music the sound of vocals, guitars, keyboards, horns etc typically occupy the upper and mid ranges – and the amount of information concentrated in this frequency range can be substantial. If the snare drum also competes for attention in this frequency range it can potentially leave the vocal and instrumental sounds lacking presence and vitality.
What is truly necessary is not simply to stand out – but to stay out of the way of the upper voices -and yet always remain a valuable presence in the music.
We view the crucial role of the “baritone” as supporting the musical center of gravity of the entire ensemble while maintaining a clear and confident presence at all times.

Carrying the Idea Forward, and Taking It Further.
This is not the first time we have turned this concept into a unique product.
Several years ago, we introduced a limited-edition “Baritone Snare.” Even at that time, when the effectiveness of a snare drum was often measured primarily by volume and cutting power, we were already focused on the potential of the lower register to support the ensemble. We have now entered a new era!
With the widespread popularity of home recording and video streaming, drummers have more opportunities than ever to hear their own sound objectively. A common dilemma is that a sound which seems perfect while playing can actually end up interfering with the vocals and upper register when heard in playback – resulting in the overall balance and “center of gravity” of the band feeling unstable.
More and more players are confronting this reality and this is why we believe today that matters is not “how much the sound projects or cuts through” but “how does it contribute to the music as a whole”.
The new BA-1470 is not simply a recreation of the earlier model of Baritone Snare.
We have revisited the concept from the perspective of today’s music production and performance environments, and further refined it into a unique new instrument.

Not simply producing low frequencies, but MAKING LOW FREQUENCIES WORK!
With low tension, many snare drums become dominated by the sound of the actual head.
Although the pitch drops, the drum may also lose its core and definition.
The BA-1470 features a hybrid shell construction – combining the mellow, dryness of walnut with the dark, low-centered character of birch. In addition, Canopus’ proprietary bearing-edge design efficiently captures and focuses the energy of a loosened drumhead – producing a solid, focused low end without ever becoming unruly.
The Baritone snare comes equipped with 12-strand snare wires (CPSL-14DR12) which suppress excessive snare rattle and vibration – drawing out the optimum response. As a result the sound image remains clear and defined – a perfectly balanced snare sound that sits naturally within the recording/playing environment.
The drum comes standard with a two-ply CB14E (Coated Heavy) head – controlling the excessive head resonance that can occur at low tunings and making full use of the abundant air volume provided by the 14 × 7-inch shell – transforming it into dense, powerful sound.
None of this is simply about adding more low end.
It is about bringing out the vocals, supporting the melody and stabilizing the center of gravity of the entire ensemble.Rather than asserting itself in the high frequencies, it supports the music from the low end. It does not push itself to the front – but at the same time it always remains a vital presence in the music.
The BA-1470 is a snare drum that refines the “Baritone” role we have pursued for many years – adapting the concept to today’s modern music-production environment.
We have long believed in the value of this register, and we now present that philosophy in a new form of drum – the realization of what we envision as “BARITONE.”
