Jonty O’Connor began drumming at thirteen and studied jazz at Ara Music Arts in his hometown of Ōtautahi (Christchurch), Aotearoa (New Zealand).
Following the 2011 earthquake, he became deeply involved in the city’s recovering music scene, performing across a wide range of projects including the experimental jazz group Pastels. During his studies he joined rock band, Von Voin Strum. The band achieved significant airplay on national radio, and opened for international acts, including INXS and Slash.
After the group disbanded, his focus shifted toward producing his own works, and expanding his career as a creative session musician. Since then Jonty has recorded with artists, such as Kane Strang, Nadia Reid, Joe Ghatt and many more.
He has performed with a wide range of talent, including Finn Andrews (The Veils), Terrible Sons, Ben Waters (The Rolling Stones), Scribe, and Zen Mantra.
“I feel comfortable in many musical situations, and humble myself by learning new styles. I value music that draws on improvisation, the creative spirit, and the human element.”
Jonty has recently moved to Los Angeles and is excited for this new chapter in his career. He is proud to endorse Canopus Drums.
